HEALTH & Physical Education

School Year:  2020-2021

Teacher:  Mr. Sammel

Course Description:  Health class will cover various topics such as alcohol, tobacco, decision making etc.  Physical Education will include a variety of fitness and sport activities. We will get into both team and individual activities throughout the course.  Sports history, rules, skills, and strategy will be taught. We will also emphasize stretching, exercising, conditioning, and overall physical fitness.

Goals:  The goal of Health Class is to give students the information they need to live a long, healthy, happy life. Our physical education program has been designed to provide an environment that will instill the importance of fitness throughout life.  This is accomplished through the instruction of body mechanics, individual physical activities, team sports, recreational activities, and life skills. Students should be open minded about trying new sports and activities.

Materials needed for P.E.:

*Tennis shoes/sneakers are the only acceptable footwear to be worn on the gym floor.  Boots, sandals, flip-flops etc. will not be permitted during P.E. class. Shoes must be worn at all times.

*T-shirts and sweatshirts can be worn in class.  It is recommended to have a sweatshirt available in case we go outside on a cooler day.  Mesh shorts or sweatpants must be worn to earn credit.

*Regular school dress code applies in the gym.  Make sure clothes are school appropriate.

Grading Policy:

Each day students have the opportunity to earn 5 total points in P.E. class.  2 points will be earned for simply bringing the proper shoes and clothes, although you must participate to earn those points.  2 points can be earned by participating in the daily activity. 1 point can be earned for having good sportsmanship.

-Students must participate in the entire class to earn both participation points.  This includes group warm-ups and stretching. Points will be taken away if FULL participation is not accomplished.

I do not grade students on their skill level.  If they are putting forth effort on a daily basis while bringing the proper clothing they will do well in my class.

Doctor Excuse or Illness

If you are unable to participate for any amount of time, you are required to bring in either an excuse from a doctor you saw or from your parent/guardian.  If the note is from your parent/guardian it must have a contact phone number on it so I can verify. No points will be taken away for missing class with a legitimate note.  If the excuse is an extended period of time an alternate assignment may be given.

General Gym Rules

*Students should be ready to participate 5 minutes after the tardy bell rings.  I will give them 5 minutes to change at the end of class.

*Cell phones and cameras are NOT to be in the gym.  You can put them in the left drawer of the counter if you want to bring them.

*Students with Asthma should bring their inhaler to the gym if they need it, and alert the teacher.

*Report all injuries to the teacher, whether it is minor or major.  Do so immediately in order to eliminate further injury.

*No food, candy, or gum is allowed in the gym.  Students may bring water bottles, but not any other kind of beverage.  Water bottles must stay off the gym floor!

*Disrespectful comments towards classmates will not be tolerated.  Sportsmanship is part of your grade and I take it very seriously.

*Respect equipment in the gym.  Using equipment in a manner that it is not intended for will get you a zero for the day and removed from class immediately.  This includes hanging on the basketball nets or rims. If equipment is unusable you will be responsible for replacing it.

*Only the teacher and the gym aide are permitted in the equipment room.  No student is permitted in the trainers room unless you are with the trainer.

*Extra credit is available to be earned at random parts of the grading period at the teacher’s discretion.  Leading stretches is one way to get 1 point extra credit.
