Library Aides are responsible for keeping the library in order. They must be independent workers and complete daily tasks without assistance from the Librarian when a class is working in the library. They must be able to complete their duties without distracting the other students. Aides help other students to find and check out books. They put the books away and straighten book shelves. Aides keep the magazines in order and file and organize the magazines in the back stacks. When new books arrive, Library Aides help to enter data, file cards on the new books, and cover new books. They complete clerical work as needed. Aides clean, straighten, and decorate the library for holidays. They package books and complete mailing labels to loan books to other libraries. Aides repair books or “weed” books that are outdated or beyond repair. They run errands such as taking messages to other students that books are in. Aides process overdue notices and put them in teacher mailboxes for delivery to students. They shut down computers and put away equipment at the end of the day.
