Family Consumer Science Qtr 1

Course Description

Introduction to Family Consumer Science is a course for 8th grade students. Students in this course will develop knowledge and skills to become healthy and functioning members of a family. The course is intended to assist students to manage the challenges of living across their lifespan. Enrolled students will cover areas of: Food Safety & Kitchen Preparation, Meal Preparation, Basic sewing & Mending, Budgeting, Parenting & Child Development, Nutrition and Healthy Living.

Materials Needed:

For the sewing section, you will be asked to bring in a small section of fabric and a spool of thread.  The fabric can be recycled material, such as an old shirt.  If you have any spare buttons at home, each student will use 3 types, so please consider donating these to the school.  There are choices for your sewing project, and the harder choice is worth bonus points.

Homework and Make-up Work:

*The importance of good attendance cannot be stressed enough for this class.  Much of the work is hands on.

*The class does papers/projects in class every day.  If you work in class, you should rarely have homework.  However, if you do not finish in class, you will have homework that night.  The exception to the homework rule will be the parenting section, which will be explained at that time.  Because this section will take a lot of your time, you will be rewarded with a lot of points.

*Absences can cause you to fall behind very quickly.  If you miss class, it is your responsibility to follow your schedule and make up what you missed.
