AP Composition ELA 11 Assignments

Instructor
Katrina Caffrey
Term
19-20 School Year
Department
English Language Arts
Description
AP English 11 will require students to become skilled readers of prose written in a variety of
rhetorical contexts and skilled writers who compose for a variety of purposes. Both their reading
and their writing should make students aware of interactions among a writer’s purposes, readers
expectations, and an author’s propositional content, as well as the genre conventions and the
resources of language that contribute to effectiveness in writing. At the end of course, students
may choose to take the AP English Language and Composition Exam. Students who score a
grade of 3 or above on the exam can receive college credit at most colleges and universities.
Prerequisite: Student should have earned at least an 85% in Honors English 10.

What is your favorite recipe?

Assignment - In honor of poetry month....
Symbolic Recipe Poetry Assignment - Write a symbolic recipe for yourself. This means your ingredients are not blood, muscle, bone, and brown hair, but abstract qualities and personality traits (like patience, friendliness, humor). What is necessary to create you? First, brainstorm a list of qualities that describe your personality and who you are. Then, following a standard recipe format*, use this list to create a list of ingredients and exact measurements. How much patience do you have in you? How much humor? After your “Ingredient List” is complete, write a paragraph of instructions, advice about the proper sequence of steps, and any tips or warnings. This is a creative assignment, and it should reflect as much originality and creativity as you could generate.
The final symbolic recipe is worth 50 points. I have attached the rubric and an example of what the final copy should/could look like. I have also included various abstract qualities for your perusal.

Look up "The Bomber" cover on Rolling Stone magazine and respond to the prompt: Clearly, Rolling Stone took a huge rhetorical risk with this cover. Was that risk – in this case, portraying Dzhokar Tsarnaev as an attractive young man rather than as a monster – an effective means to a worthwhile end? In other words, does the cover direct the audience’s attention to the article and the issues it addresses, or does it distract from them? Does it prompt us to reflect on our own assumptions about terrorism? Or is this image simply too sympathetic to Tsarnaev to be anything but downright insensitive?

1. First, note first the structure of the book, starting with the acknowledgments; then the Table of Contents; the poem "Headwaters"; the Prologue and Introduction; use of pictures and captions; sections and divisions of those sections; the placement of paragraphs on page, fonts used, use of white space, types of reporting; the Epilogue; the picture; the poem "Rocky Mountain Cemetery"; back of book–design, what others have said.

2. Now, to the front poem: what is the topic? what about language? imagery? speaker? form? meaning(s)?

3. Whose voice is "speaking" the Prologue? What information are we given? What kind of journey(s) are included? What is the connection between the "imagination" and "memory"? Note the language–and the quotation–on 2nd page.

4. What does the Introduction provide in the way of information, "type(s)" of history, images, places, tradition; note–always!–Momaday's language; and, what do the silhouettes accomplish for the reader of TWRM?
