Directions:
Read pages 140 – 148 in your textbook. The underlined passages indicate the parts Congress omitted from the original. The words that were added by Congress appear in the margins. Answer the following questions as you read. The page numbers indicate where to find the answers for the questions.

Pages 140 – 141

1. In the first half of paragraph 1, what change to the Declaration does Jefferson discuss? What is Jefferson’s opinion of this change?
2. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? How does it lend credibility to the document’s arguments?
3. What does Jefferson’s reference to “the laws of nature and of nature’s God” suggest about his religious beliefs and philosophical beliefs?
4. In the second paragraph of the Declaration, what kind of equality is Jefferson referring to?
5. In the second paragraph, Jefferson says, “all men are created equal.” Why might Jefferson have phrased the statement this way? What groups does he exclude?

Pages 142 – 143

6. Humans are born into many situations that are not equal. Some are born into poverty; and some, into wealth. Some are born into situations in which their talents are nurtured, and some are not. To what kind of equality is Jefferson referring?
7. Read aloud the list of self-evident truths at the start of the paragraph. How does the use of parallelism enhance the sound of the passage?
8. Why might Jefferson have chosen to make the clauses “it is their right” and “it is their duty” parallel?
9. The paragraphs that being with He has refer to King George’s abuses against the Colonists. How does the use of parallelism affect this long series of paragraphs?
10. What is the main idea of the paragraphs that list King George’s offenses? How does this idea relate to the Colonist’s right to rebel against the Crown?
11. What loaded words – words with strong emotional overtones – does Jefferson employ in this paragraph? How do these words strengthen his argument? How do they affect his style? Explain your response.

Pages 144 – 145

12. How has the artist depicted the process of writing and revising the Declaration?
13. To what general sphere of interest do all the actions in this paragraph refer? What is the main idea of the paragraph?
14. What are the parallel structures within this structure?
15. In paragraph 6, what crime is the king accused of? How do the writers of the Declaration feel about these actions?
16. In paragraph 4, why do you think the Continental Congress chose to alter Jefferson’s draft here and refer to the king’s “waging war” against them?

Pages 146 – 147

17. It is well known that Thomas Jefferson owned slaves. Nevertheless, based on this material omitted from the Declaration by the Congress, what does his opinion of slavery seem to be?
18. What is the main idea of the deleted passage that goes from the bottom of page 146 – page 147? Do you think this paragraph added to Jefferson’s arguments about equality?
19. In the paragraph on page 147, why might Congress have chosen to delete the word eternal from the last sentence? Also, what will the Colonists consider Britain to be from now on?
20. Under the History Link, read and answer, why do you think protecting this document has always been so important to Americans?

Pages 148

21. Just as Jefferson uses vivid verbs – refused, abdicated, plundered, constrained, incited – in the list of charges against the king, he uses equally vivid verbs to describe the actions the Colonists are taking against the Crown. What is the effect of these verbs?
22. What is the purpose of the Declaration of Independence?
23. What argument does Jefferson make to support the colonies’ right to declare independence?
