Meeting Times 2019-2020

* November Meetings
11/6
Minutes:
1. Officer Application
Ms. Caffrey discussed officer applications with students. She reviewed the responsibilities of each officer for the year. She encouraged students to take a paper and put in an application for the positions. Officer applications are due by 11/12 - Tuesday; voting will take place by secret ballot on 11/13 at the meeting during Flex period in room 203.
2. Grades and Discipline
Ms. Caffrey discussed grades and discipline with students. She reminded students that they needed to maintain the necessary 3.5 GPA to continue membership in NJHS. She asked students to see her with their current GPA by next week, the GPA that was distributed after the 1st nine weeks period. If a member falls below this GPA, a letter of warning will be sent home. Members will be encouraged to take part in after school tutoring or FLEX period tutoring. Ms. Caffrey informed students that she will be reviewing all discipline issues to make sure that students have not had any infractions. If members have disciplinary infractions, they will meet with the NJHS Board to discuss potential removal from the NJHS. Members were encouraged to make sound decisions in regards to the pillars of NJHS.
3. Project Ideas
Members discussed potential projects for the Fall/Winter term that included but were not limited to sponsoring an Angel Tree child, writing Christmas cards to soldiers or veterans, etc. They were encouraged to generate ideas and to bring them to the next meeting on 11/13.
4. Spring Ceremony
There will be a ceremony of new inductees potentially in March of 2020. A more specific date will be sent home with students by December.
5. Backpacking
Backpacking dates for NJHS will take place on December 19, March 13 and May 8th. Students will be informed ahead of time if they are required to take part in backpacking for those dates. Backpacking will take place during 3rd or 4th period on those dates.
6. NHS Hours
Questions arose concerning hours needed for NHS (National Honor Society). In order to be considered for NHS a student must have and maintain a 3.7 GPA by their freshman year. They must have 16 hours of community service by their sophomore year for selection (those hours can be obtained during their freshman year). Students being considered for NHS selection in their junior year must have 24 hours by their junior year. Students being considered for NHS selection in their senior year must have 32 hours of community service. If you do not understand this information, be sure to ask questions during our next meeting. NJHS hours are accrued during our projects throughout the year, but do not count towards consideration for NHS.
The meeting was ended and members returned to their classes. The next meeting, as stated above will take place during FLEX period in room 203 on November 13. We will vote on officers and discuss the fall/winter project.
